“Can’t you trace the number?” I ask the Galveston Country Sheriff in our living room downstairs. Paul, Mel, Jake, and I are all sitting on the sofa, as Officer Gelhorn takes notes on a tiny pad with a pen.

“No Ma’am. Not from an unknown number.” He looks at me like I need to stop watching so much true crime TV.

“He’s still in county lockup. So, whoever it was, it wasn’t him.” He dismisses my claim once again.

“There’s a protective order in place at my old house. Can we have that changed to here?” He nods but doesn’t speak.

“Well what does she need to do to get that done?” Paul is getting just as frustrated as I am by the sound of his voice.

“Go to the local courthouse and petition for a new order. Lawyers usually help with that kind of stuff.” His tone is demeaning, and he’s been basically no help at all.

“Thank you for coming by officer, you’ve been a tremendous help. And I’d like a copy of the report.” I excuse him.

“Police reports are-”

“At the courthouse?” I ask, cutting him off and receiving a tip of his hat.

“You have a nice day Ma’am.”

I watch him stroll out the door, closing it behind him, wanting to yell in utter frustration and anger.

“Hey, you wanna play the game down here with me for a bit?” Jake asks Mel, sensing my need to get away. My fight or flight response is in overdrive as I try not to pace in circles.

“Sure, with snacks?” She negotiates.

“Yeah, no problem. Just hang out here for a bit and get the game loaded up. I’ll be back.”

Paul grabs the box of mail from just inside the door, as we all climb up to the third floor. He sits the box on the coffee table with a thud.

“Thank you.” I smile at Jake. Then throw my arms around Paul. I just need someone to make me feel safe right now. Someone to take comfort in.

“I’m not going to let anything happen to you.” He assures me in the same resolute tone Jake did at the café.

“I think we can play for an hour or two. Give you guys some time.” Jake says, carrying an armload of sodas and chips downstairs, as the sound system roars to life.

“It’s my record. I swear to God, they take one look at mine, and just pass me over. ‘Oh, she’s got a felony, we can’t trust her. We won’t help her.” I kick the box of mail, the top layer spilling onto the floor.

“The system is so fucked up.” I want to scream, but only mutter instead.

“I know baby, I know. Believe me, I know.” He pulls me into him. It’s the first time he’s called me baby. A term of endearment I’ve never heard him use before, as a warm sensation flows through me.

“Can you grab me a drink? I think I’m going to need one for all this.” I gesture to the mail in the box, as he nods, heading for the kitchen.
